Understanding the Telugu Panchangam & Shalivahana Shaka

The Telugu Panchangam (తెలుగు పంచాంగం) is the traditional astronomical and religious almanac observed across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Yanam, and Telugu communities worldwide. Followed under the Shalivahana Shaka Era (78 CE epoch) and the Amanta (Sukladi) lunar calendar, it governs all auspicious ceremonies, temple utsavams, harvest festivals, and civil celebrations starting on Ugadi.

The Anatomy of the Five Limbs (పంచాంగములు)

The Sanskrit term Panchanga signifies the five essential astronomical limbs that capture the cosmic energy of any given moment:

  • Tidhi (తిథి): The angular displacement of the Moon from the Sun in 12° intervals. The waxing fortnight is known as Shuddha Paksham, and the waning fortnight is Bahula Paksham.
  • Vaaram (వారం): The seven solar weekdays named after celestial rulers: Aadivaram, Somavaram, Mangalavaram, Budhavaram, Guruvaram, Shukravaram, and Shanivaram.
  • Nakshatram (నక్షత్రం): The Moon's position across the 27 stellar asterisms, divided into 4 padas of 3°20′ each.
  • Yogam (యోగం): The combined longitudinal sum of the Sun and Moon divided into 27 segments.
  • Karanam (కరణం): Half of a Tidhi (6° arc), comprising 7 movable and 4 fixed Karanams.
Crucial Telugu Inauspicious Periods: Durmuhurtham & Varjyam

Unlike many other regional systems, Telugu Jyotish places extraordinary emphasis on avoiding Durmuhurtham and Varjyam:

  • Durmuhurtham (దుర్ముహూర్తం): Calculated by dividing the daytime into 15 equal Muhurthas. Specific Muhurtha slots are considered highly afflicted depending on the weekday.
  • Varjyam (వర్జ్యం): The toxic portion (Vishaghatika) of each Nakshatra. It lasts approximately 4 Ghatikas (96 minutes) and is strictly avoided for marriage and Griha Pravesham.
  • Amrutha Kalam (అమృత కాలం): A deeply favorable window occurring after the conclusion of Varjyam, celebrated as the optimal time for religious and commercial starts.
Semi-Technical Mechanics: The 60-Year Jovian Cycle

In the Telugu calendar, time is organized into recurring 60-year cycles corresponding to five complete revolutions of Jupiter around the Sun. Starting from Prabhava and ending in Akshaya, each year brings distinct agricultural, meteorological, and economic trends which are formally recited during the Panchanga Sravanam on Ugadi day.

Frequently Asked Questions (తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు)

The Telugu Panchangam is an Amanta luni-solar calendar anchored to the Shalivahana Shaka Era (78 CE epoch). Every lunar month begins on the day after the New Moon (Shuddha Padyami) and concludes on the New Moon (Amavasya). Planetary positions are calculated using the sidereal Nirayana zodiac with Chitra Paksha (Lahiri) Ayanamsha.

The Telugu New Year commences on Ugadi (Chaitra Shuddha Padyami), occurring in late March or early April. Families celebrate by tasting Ugadi Pachadi (a symbolic dish combining six distinct flavors representing the diverse experiences of life) and participating in Panchanga Sravanam to hear the annual astrological prognostications.

The Telugu calendar organizes time into 60-year Jovian cycles (Barhaspatya Mana) named from Prabhava (ప్రభవ) to Akshaya (అక్షయ). Each year is governed by a distinct celestial presiding energy that influences societal rainfall, agricultural prosperity, geopolitical shifts, and spiritual consciousness.

Durmuhurtham is an inauspicious time window occurring once or twice every day based on ancient planetary Muhurtha divisions. In Telugu tradition, beginning any auspicious work, wedding ritual, Griha Pravesham, or commercial agreement during Durmuhurtham is strictly avoided.

Varjyam represents the inauspicious Vishaghatika period of a Nakshatra, lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. It occurs at specific elapsed Ghatikas of each lunar mansion. Initiating auspicious deeds during Varjyam is believed to introduce obstacles and adverse results.

Amrutha Kalam is a highly auspicious time window that occurs after the completion of Varjyam on any given day. Performing sacred rites, spiritual initiation, housewarming, or signing agreements during Amrutha Kalam is considered exceptionally fruitful and protective.

Shuddha Paksham (శుద్ధ పక్షం) is the waxing fortnight from New Moon to Full Moon (Tithis 1 to 15), while Bahula Paksham (బహుళ పక్షం) is the waning fortnight from Full Moon to New Moon (Tithis 16 to 30). In Telugu tradition, Shuddha Paksham is generally favored for growth-oriented life initiatives.

The five limbs (పంచాంగములు) are: (1) Tidhi (తిథి) - Moon-Sun elongation; (2) Vaaram (వారం) - the solar weekday; (3) Nakshatram (నక్షత్రం) - the lunar asterism; (4) Yogam (యోగం) - the combined angular longitude of Sun and Moon; and (5) Karanam (కరణం) - the half-tithi interval.

Abhijit Muhurtham is the auspicious 8th Muhurtham of the day (centered at local solar noon) dedicated to Lord Vishnu that neutralizes minor doshas. Rahu Kalam is an inauspicious 90-minute window ruled by Rahu during which starting new journeys, purchases, or investments is prohibited.

Prominent Telugu festivals include Ugadi and Sri Rama Navami (Chaitramu), Toli Ekadashi and Bonalu (Ashadhamu), Varalakshmi Vratam and Janmashtami (Shravanamu), Vinayaka Chavithi (Bhadrapadamu), Bathukamma and Vijayadashami (Ashwayujamu), Deepavali and Kartika Purnima (Karthikamu), Vaikunta Ekadashi (Margashirshamu), Makara Sankranti (Pushyamu), and Maha Shivaratri (Maghamu).
