What is Shadbala? (The 6-Fold Planetary Strength)

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), looking at a birth chart and seeing an exalted planet does not mean that planet is strong. To know the true mathematical capacity of a planet to deliver results, sages use a highly complex system called Shadbala. It literally translates to "Six-fold strength." It calculates six entirely different sources of power and adds them up to give a final score in units called Rupas and Shashtiamsas (Virupas).

The 6 Pillars of Shadbala
  • 1. Sthana Bala (Positional): Strength gained from the planet's sign, exaltation degree, and placement in a Kendra (Angular) house.
  • 2. Dig Bala (Directional): Strength gained from the planet's direction in the sky. Sun/Mars are strongest in the 10th house (South). Jupiter/Mercury in the 1st house (East). Saturn in the 7th house (West). Moon/Venus in the 4th house (North).
  • 3. Kala Bala (Temporal): Strength gained based on time factors: Day/Night birth, Lunar phase (Shukla/Krishna Paksha), and planetary hours.
  • 4. Cheshta Bala (Motional): Strength gained from a planet's velocity relative to Earth. Retrograde planets possess immense Cheshta Bala.
  • 5. Naisargika Bala (Natural): Fixed natural brightness. The Sun is always the strongest, Saturn is naturally the weakest.
  • 6. Drik Bala (Aspectual): Strength added by the beneficial aspects of Jupiter/Venus, and reduced by the malefic aspects of Saturn/Mars.
Rupas vs Required Strength

Total strength is measured in Rupas (1 Rupa = 60 Shashtiamsas). However, every planet has a different minimum requirement to be considered "Balavan" (Capable). Mercury requires 7.0 Rupas to function properly, while Saturn only requires 5.0 Rupas. Therefore, looking at the Strength Ratio (%) is the only accurate way to determine which planet is truly dominating your chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about interpreting planetary strength.

Exaltation is only one component (Uccha Bala) of Sthana Bala. Even if a planet is exalted, it might be in the wrong direction (0 Dig Bala), combust, or heavily aspected by malefics (negative Drik Bala), causing its total Shadbala to drop below the required threshold.

Shadbala measures the capacity of a planet to deliver results, not whether the results are inherently good or bad. If Saturn is your strongest planet, you will have immense discipline, career longevity, and ability to handle hardshipโ€”but you may also experience significant delays and seriousness in life.

No. The traditional BPHS Shadbala system only calculates the strength of the 7 physical bodies (Sun through Saturn). Rahu and Ketu are shadow nodes without mass or independent light, so classical mathematical Shadbala does not apply to them.

Because of their Naisargika Bala (Natural Strength). Saturn is the darkest, slowest planet, naturally contributing fewer points to the overall score. Mercury and Sun are bright and inherently powerful. The BPHS thresholds are adjusted to account for these natural differences.

Yes. If a benefic planet controlling your wealth or health has a ratio below 100%, wearing its corresponding authentic Gemstone or Rudraksha is the classical Vedic remedy to artificially boost its energetic capacity (Bala).
